2012,12,23-2013,01,19 – The Art Space, Huntsville
Same as I have done during the past two years, I presented an art show at the Art Space during the Chrismas/New Year holidays. This year it was the show YGGDRASIL and it was loosely based on the theme of the world tree or ‘Yddrasil’ in Norse mythology. The year is 2012 and the focus is on the famous/infamous galactic alignment that took place and was an event of incredible significance according to mythologies such as that of the Mayans and the Hopi. According to the myth, Dec. 21, 2012 is the closing of a the 13th Bak’tun in the Maya Long Count calendar marked by the alignment of our sun with the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, which only happens once every 25,772 years. This event is thought to trigger cataclysmic change on earth and as I write this in 2019, the prophecy seems to be unfolding as predicted as we face an unprecedented moment in the history of humankind – high potential for annihilation of ‘organized human life’ on the planet. Though it was popularly assumed that the ‘world would end’ at this date, the new cycle is more about changes in human consciousness. Very much needed now too as the way our societies are structured are clearly proving to be unsustainable and more so by the minute. This is not a ‘liberal hoax’ – the arctic ice caps really are melting.
This show honors and explores this monumental event which received plenty of attention the year of, but a few years later has vanished without a trace from public consciousness. As usual my art show began and ended with events where I played the audio that I was working on at the time and invited others to perform. Below is a short clip from one the Art Space’s favorites, Christine Heron, performing ‘Room for Rent’ with myself mixing and applying effects.
On one of the walls images of crop circles were posted. All of the most significant circles were presented from 1995 to 2006 – these were the years during which the phenomenon was most active.
On the facing wall was a large rendition of the
